Happy Summer, Everyone!
It’s always a busy one for me since I have lots of art fairs and other events I attend to hock my books. This summer is particularly busy since I’ve just released my newest book: When Teddy Came to Town. This historical novel, set in 1913, is about the Theodore Roosevelt libel trial that took place in Marquette, Michigan. Roosevelt was accused of being a drunkard by a local newspaper editor. He decided to sue the editor and bring to Marquette to testify in his behalf dozens of witnesses, including former members of his cabinet, his bodyguards, and cousins. The novel chronicles what happened during the trial, but it’s also the story of Matthew Newman, a New York reporter who returns to his hometown of Marquette to report on the trial. Matthew discovers that his past in Marquette still haunts him as he becomes reacquainted with family and old friends and finds himself unexpectedly thrown together with Roosevelt in several social settings. If you’d like an autographed copy of When Teddy Came to Town, you can find me this summer at the Outback Art Fair in Marquette on Saturday, July 28 and Sunday, July 29. I’ll also be in Sault Sainte, Marie, Michigan on Thursday, August 23 to Saturday, August 25 at the Michigan Paranormal Conference, where I’ll be promoting my books Haunted Marquette, Spirit of the North: a Paranormal Romance, and The Gothic Wanderer along with my newest book. If you’re in the area, stop by to say hi.
Of course, summer reading is a necessity, so there are several more wonderful books below that I recommend for your day at the beach or afternoon in a hammock. Enjoy!
This Month’s Great Book Quote:
“W What on earth could be more luxurious than a sofa, a book, and a cup of coffee?...Was ever anything so civil?”
— Anthony Trollope, The Warden (1855)
In Igniting Purpose-Driven Leadership, Jim Nevada, executive consultant, coach, and entrepreneur, suggests that the essential element many leaders are missing and that sets apart successful leaders from the rest is a focus on purpose. In his book, he reveals how leaders can stay focused on their and their organization’s purpose and find the right people to bring that purpose to fruition.
Far more than just another business or personal development book, Igniting Purpose-Driven Leadership is packed with research about leadership, successful businesses, and the philosophies of world-leading companies and their CEOs. The extensive notes and index show that Nevada has done his research, and the book’s tone and content reflect that he has not only done it well, but he has made it digestible by providing an entertaining and informative read for anyone who wants to become a better leader.
Many successful companies are featured in Igniting Purpose-Driven Leadership, including Google, Amazon, and Southwest Airlines.

S. B. Shine’s new book PAIN AWAITS is aptly titled since it reflects the pain that the American government, economy, and people are experiencing as we begin to fear that, like the Roman Empire, we are in our decline and fall. Shine discusses many of the causes of this situation, ranging from illegal immigration and government overspending to the drug culture and a lack of strong family values in the younger generations, but he does not dwell on the problems so much as the solutions.
How to solve the problem of America’s current situation is easily an overwhelming topic to ponder, but Shine breaks the problem down into manageable chunks. The book is divided into several parts, each of which takes on a major aspect of the problem, including Financial, Security, Economy, and what Shine calls “The Dirty Dozen.” This Dirty Dozen includes topics like whether taxes are too high or too low, the US’s acting like a charity toward other countries, regulation, voting, unions, government-owned property, Russia, and the importance of volunteering.
The book’s title is also fitting because implementing the solutions—doing the hard work of solving America’s problems—will not be easy.

Sanjay Raja’s new book The Food Talk offers advice on how you can talk about food with your children and change their eating habits for the better. In the book, he makes the excellent point that talking about food with your children is just as important as talking to them about sex—food and sex are both very pleasurable but there is always risk involved. He also points out that if your children are able to say “macaroni and cheese” or “chicken tenders,” they’re able to say “carbohydrates” and “protein” and know what those words mean. We all want our children to eat better, more nutritious and healthier food. We just don’t know how to make that happen, and there are many culprits that try to sabotage us along the way.
Raja offers step-by-step instructions in this book for parents so they can do everything from beginning to have the food talk with their children to getting them to read food labels and to eliminate sugar from their diets. He is not delusional—yes, children are bound to eat sugar—but we can also teach them about the effects sugar has on the body and teach them to cultivate tastes for nutritious foods—even broccoli and cauliflower.
