This Month’s Great Book Quote:
“One can never have enough socks. Another Christmas has come and gone and I didn’t get a single pair. People will insist on giving me books.
— J.K. Rowling, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone
Every year with the holidays comes the Rose Bowl and this year is the 100th anniversary, so what better way to celebrate than a new book about the first Rose Bowl championship team?
Chance for Glory is the kind of book from which great sports movies are made. It has everything in it that a true sports fan or just the lover of a good story desires, from a compelling plot to interesting characters, a blend of history, a lot of action, and a fair dose of humor. And it’s being released just in time to celebrate the one-hundred-year anniversary of the first Rose Bowl game played by Washington State College against Brown University in 1916.
Since author Darin Watkins is an alumnus of what is now Washington State University, his focus, of course, is on the Washington team, and he begins the story by depicting for us a young school struggling to survive against its larger rival, the University of Washington, which wanted to limit what its sister school could teach....a school that also badly needed a good football coach.

With all the tragedy around us in recent weeks, during a time of the year that should be marked by goodwill toward all, Living Your Life Alive offers a refreshing perspective.
Can you even imagine what it must have been like to be a responder to the Columbine shooting? How could anyone move past the horror and sadness of such an event, and go on to continue to do her job through numerous other tragic situations, much less to live a happy and fulfilling life?
Autumn Shields has just about seen it all in her former career as a victim advocate. She has seen tears and pain and senseless violence, but she has also seen the human spirit rise above it all and continue on. Now, in her new book Living Your Life Alive, she shares with us how sometimes it takes tragedy to make us wake up and live the lives intended for us. Hopefully, however, you won’t need to experience a tragedy to have a wakeup call; instead, as Autumn explains, you just have to listen to your “inner nudges.”
Sadly, too many of us don’t listen to our nudges. We allow negativity and self-doubt to hold us back in life. Autumn illustrates this point by explaining how monkeys are captured on Borneo....

If Christmas isn’t scary enough for you, then you’ll enjoy this reading experience like none before—an experience that will leave you truly wondering, “What the hell was that?”
In his new collection, aptly titled, What the Hell Was That?, author Jeffrey Friedberg holds nothing back. We have a story set in the future in which a senior citizen’s inability to control a growing blob coming out of his sink drain with a government-authorized cleaning product might lead to his arrest; we have the story of an insane writer, Burke Hare, who lives in his own imaginary world, but in the real world, this eccentric millionaire also wants a body double—and oddly enough hires a sexy kick-ass girl for the role. And that’s only the start of the murder and mayhem sprinkled across nearly every page, along with a dash of sex—often with a comic twist—and best of all, nearly every page has a laugh-out-loud sentence—which may make this book all the scarier.
By the time you get to the space aliens possessing a character’s human body, you’ll be asking yourself how any author can be so funny, so grotesque, and yet so insightful about our own time and its quirky social problems?

When their children are kidnapped from the family castle, Adam and Anne Delaney race back to England from their vacation in France. Assuming their children will be held for ransom, the couple are ill-prepared for the truth about who has kidnapped their boys. Secrets of both of their families will be revealed as a result.
When the great wizard Merlin mysteriously reappears in their lives, Adam and Anne hope he can help with the investigation. But Merlin is more concerned with sharing yet another story about one of their ancestors, this time Ogier the Dane, a great knight of Charlemagne’s court, a pagan among Christians who went on a fabulous journey to the East. Ogier’s story will enlighten Adam and Anne about an ancient evil soon to be unleashed on the world—and they may be the only ones capable of defeating it.
Ogier’s Prayer, the third volume of Tyler R. Tichelaar’s Children of Arthur series, will take readers on a magic carpet ride reminiscent of the Arabian Nights as Tichelaar weaves stories within stories in a manner to rival Scheherazade herself.
